Kenyan Originals Counting Success in Kenya With Local Ciders
Kenya is a land of many startups which have seen a recognizable amount of success and have widened borders to a continental and even global reach.
Many of the startups in Kenya are tech startups, it seems to be the most explored area for startups. The country has seen startups in various techs micro fields like insuretech, healthtech, agritech, fintech etc. Very few startups think about manufacturing or other fields that are not necessarily tech related.
When looking at the success of a startup, the most important thing to look at is what you are offering to the consumer. For a startup that is not focused on tech, what you look at is the number of customers that benefit from your products.
For Kenyan Originals, a beverage startup that focuses on cider production, the success they’ve had is reflected on the experiences their customers have. Kenyan Originals is a daring startup, that ventured into the beverage sector in Kenya with a 100% Kenyan brand using locally available ingredients.
100% of the materials are sourced locally in Kenya and its produced here for the Kenyan consumption. Kenya Originals’ success is seen in how much Kenyans have embraced the brand and liked the idea of a locally produced drink with 100% local materials.

Alexandre Chappatte, the founder of Kenyan Originals, started out the brand because she was challenged to make an alcoholic drink with real fruit. She has a background in food and beverage. She says that the raw materials she found in Kenya made it possible to make an alcoholic drink with real fruit.
“Our vision is to be African leading craft beverage company. Craft for me is about making something that’s from the local area and making it with craft and care,” she said, “For us to know what a Kenyan consumer wants from craft, we looked at what was traditional and has been traditionally rooted in the way that people drink beverages in Kenya.”
Kenyan Originals is already proving to be a challenger to the big beverage brands in Kenya which don’t primarily sell locally produced beverages. Looking at how Kenyans are embracing the brand and sharing their experiences online, people who have tried the drink have seen the difference that Kenya Originals ciders have.
The startup also recently raised funds via crowdfunding and will be planning to expand and reach more people in the country and even the continent.
